Who is Making These Recommendations?

Hello, my name is Roger Ellerton. Since I'm providing you with my recommendations for NLP books, you should have some idea as whether or not I know what I'm talking about.

  • BSc. and MSc. from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada and PhD from Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia, USA.
  • Owns successful business (Renewal Technologies Inc.)
  • Former tenured faculty member at the University of New Brunswick.
  • Former Executive in the Canadian government.
  • Public speaker.
  • Certified management consultant (CMC) and has led a number of multi-million dollars projects, where I used my NLP skills to achieve what some thouguht to be impossible.
  • Listed in the "International Who's Who in Education".
  • Author of eight books, seven of which are on NLP.
  • Certified NLP trainer/coach. Some trainers claim to be a Master NLP trainer. I am not aware of any such bona fide program and assume afterthey have delivered one or more trainings, these trainers feel they can make this case. Given I have been delivering many NLP trainings over a 25 year period, I can only assume that I would be called a Multi-Master NLP trainer 😊.
  • Retired from public engagements. I do lend my expertise to designing NLP Trainings and the production of NLP-based videos and articles.

NLP Authors

There are many NLP authors - some great and some (well) not so great.

These are the authors that I recommend, with a link to their books at Amazon.

  • Connirae Andreas through her trainings and books has made many significant contributions to the NLP community.
  • Richard Bandler is a cofounder of NLP and has made significant contributions early in its development and later as well.
  • Shelle Rose Charvet is a well-known and respected trainer of the LAB Profile or the Language and Behavior Profile, a specific aspect of NLP that is also known as Metaprograms.
  • Robert Dilts has made significant contributions to NLP, as his books will illustrate.
  • John Grinder is a cofounder of NLP and developer of what is known as NLP New Code, which gets the unconscious mind more involved with personal changes.
  • Sue Knight is also a well-respected trainer. Her business related books have a prominent place on my bookshelf.
  • Joseph O'Connor and John Seymour are primarily known for their book Introducing NLP: Psychological Skills for Understanding and Influencing People, which for years was known as the best introductory book to NLP.
  • Anthony Robbins is known for his many life changing books and that significantly enhanced the awareness of NLP and its potential of NLP to the wider world.

Recommended NLP Books

  • Get the Life You Want: The Secrets to Quick and Lasting Life Change with Neuro-Linguistic Programming by Richard Bandler. Richard Bandler is one of the founders of NLP. So, he knows what he is talking about. After an overview of basic NLP concepts and how the processes work, Bandler provides you with techniques to address what’s holding you back, for example, fears/phobias, bad memories, grief, and bad relationships. He then gives you ways and means to add fun, love, meet people and make money into your life.
  • Frogs into Princes: Neuro Linguistic Programming by Richard Bandler and John Grinder. This is one of the books that launched the field of NLP.
  • NLP at Work: The Difference that Makes the Difference by Sue Knight. Sue Knight provides a clear and useful introduction to NLP and how it can effectively be used in a work environment. The person next to you may experience an event or the world around them quite differently from you. Hence you need to adjust your communication for them to buy into your ideas. Discover how to create an environment of safety so the other person will truly hear your message and assist you in discovering what is important to them. Other topics include: being more resourceful, improving your negotiation skills, giving and receiving feedback, and high-performance coaching.
  • The Really Good Fun Cartoon Book of NLP by Phillip Miller. NLP can be full of jargon and taken too seriously. Miller uses simple language with illustrative amusing cartoons to present the principles of NLP and how you can use NLP in your life. All of the basic material is covered and provides you with a good foundation for understanding and using NLP for yourself or to assist others.
  • Words That Change Minds by Shelle Rose Charvet. We do not necessarily experience the world around us the same as our friends, family members, or others we meet in our daily lives. Charvet presents 14 significant language/behaviours that distinguish how we react to our experiences that may be different from those with whom we wish to have a great relationship or influence. One such pattern is “toward -away from”. Toward-people are focused on their goals. They are motivated to have, get, achieve, attain, ... . Away-from people notice what should be avoided, gotten rid of, or fixed. Motivating a toward-person by telling them what needs to be avoided, simply doesn’t work.
  • From Coach to Awakener by Robert Dilts. If you are a coach or student of NLP, add this book to your library. Dilts notes that, in the past, coaching has been focused mainly on improving behavior performance through careful observation and feedback. More recently personal, executive, and life coaching has evolved to provide support on a number of different levels. Each level has a different focus and requires a different approach and set of tools. Dilts clearly explains how your coaching style must adapt to each level (environment (caretaker or guide), behaviors (coach), capabilities (teacher), beliefs and values (mentor), identity (sponsor), and spirituality (awakener)), and provides a suggested set of tools and techniques.
  • Hypnosis: A Comprehensive Guide by Tad James. Tad James (deceased) was a well-known NLP trainer who made extensive use of hypnosis during his NLP trainings and coaching sessions. Much of NLP has to do with the conscious mind. However long-lasting change often involves the unconscious mind and this is where hypnosis plays an important part of NLP – whether or not you realize you are using hypnosis.
  • Turtles All the Way Down by John Grinder and Judith DeLozier. "Turtles All the Way Down" presents NLP New Code, which also takes a systemic approach, emphasizing relationships between and within systems. Thus, NLP moved from being viewed as a collection of techniques that can simply be applied like a recipe to involving your unconscious mind and often your body responses in effecting long-lasting change.
  • Introducing NLP: Psychological Skills for Understanding and Influencing People Paperback by Joseph O’Connor and John Seymour. For those wishing a broad introduction to NLP and its various techniques, this has long been the go-to book. There is no doubt that it is a great book. I wrote my book Live Your Dreams Let Reality Catch Up: NLP and Common Sense for Coaches, Managers and You to be its primary competitor. Given that my book covers a broader introduction to NLP (including NLP New Code and other techniques), is written not as a text book but from my personal experiences with NLP as a student, coach and trainer, I believe I have been very successful.

More books will be added as time permits.
